MEETING NOTES:  FERRY COMMITTEE MEETING WITH DAVE SHERIDAN, SKAGIT COUNTY INTERIM PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

May 21, 2009

Present: Dave Sheridan, Glen Veal, Steve Orsini, Carl Cady, Dyvon Havens, Terry Ebersole

The primary purpose of the meeting was to introduce members of the GIFC to Mr. Sheridan. Glen Veal and other members gave a brief history of the Ferry Committee, its purpose,  and its relationship with the County. Subjects mentioned were methods of determining fare structure, the deficit reimbursement report, the Berk and Associates study, the value of communications between the County and Guemes Islanders, the Round Table, etc.

Carl Cady presented data to Mr. Sheridan showing ridership numbers, fare history and  targets, deficit reimbursement report figures, crew wages, and operating schedules. The GIFC expressed their desire to strengthen the relationship with the County while encouraging effective cost containment, safe operation of the boat, and the meeting of crew needs.

Mr. Sheridan stated that he is very cost conscious and has asked all department managers to look at costs. He goes to the Board of County Commissioners with solutions and recommendations, but does not seek direction from them. While Mr. Sheridan is not currently familiar with Guemes Island ferry operations, he stated he would like to learn from the past, but move forward from this point on. He said we are all part of the same team an need to work together. The current economic downturn is an “opportunity to take a hard look, dig down deep, and see what it is we do. “ He depends on his department managers, but also holds them responsible.
